Coach Bonfigli grew up in Sonoma County and played high school basketball at Cardinal Newman HS in Santa Rosa. At Cardinal Newman, he starred at point guard and still holds the school record for most assists in a single season (223 – 8.1 APG). While playing for the venerable Coach John Fitzgerald, he helped lead the Cardinals to the championship of the first Top of the Bay Classic (tournament prior to the formation of the NCS). After graduating from Cardinal Newman HS, Bonfigli went on to play at Santa Rosa Junior College where he started at point guard.

He has had a historic coaching career at St. Vincent de Paul High School, Cardinal Newman High School and Justin Siena High School amassing 833 career wins, which ranks 7th all time in California state history and 28th among active coaches nationally.  During his 41 year career, he has been named CA Division 4 Coach of the Year twice (1989, 2013), North Coast Section Honor Coach of the Year (2022), his teams have averaged 20 wins per season, he has won 15 league Championships, two NCS Championships, and two NorCal Championships.
